NLA SPLITS IN POTENTIAL PLAYOFF PREVIEW

The Barracudas played hosts to the first place Therwil Flyers on Sunday at the Herrenschürli in what could end up to be the first round playoff matchup which would begin next Friday in Therwil. The Barracudas lost game one 12-3 but then regrouped to take game two 10-0 which gives them a half game lead over the Zurich Challengers for 4th place and the last playoff spot. The Challengers and Flyers will have to make up a game that was previously rained out this Saturday to determine if the Challengers or Barracudas will face the Flyers in the five game semi-final series which would begin the following day. The split put the Barracudas at 12-12 for the season while the Challengers currently sit at 11-12. For the Flyers, the game two loss was their third of the season to put them at 20-3.

Game one featured a young pitching matchup between Barracuda starter Andi Rüesch and Flyer righty Taka Oshima. The Flyers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first as Oshima helped his own cause with a triple into the right center field game and then cleanup hitter Chris Blackbee singled him home. Rüesch then retired the side in the 2nd and 3rd but the Flyers added 3 more runs in the 4th with the help of 3 errors and 3 stolen bases. The Barracudas offense was able to get baserunners off of Oshima putting runners in scoring position in 3 of the first 4 innings but were unable to get any clutch hits to score. The Flyers added another run in the 6th to extend the lead to 4-0 but it could have been much worse for the Barracudas. As Rüesch appeared to tire, head coach JP Mottl lifted him with 2 outs and the bases loaded to bring in righty reliever Frank Berchtold. Berchtold then calmly struck out Oshima to keep the Barracudas within striking distance. The offense finally awoke in the 6th to score 2 runs and cut the deficit to 4-2 as the Barracudas had 4 consecutive hits. Brent Nichols started the rally with a double down the left field line before Nderim Coma, Chico Colindres, and Hasson Rogers all followed with singles. Rogers got the clutch hit with a bases loaded line drive up the middle which scored 2. The Barracudas stranded the bases loaded in that inning however and the Flyers continued to extend their lead. Nderim Coma entered the game in relief for the Barracudas in the 7th but he could not slow down the Flyers' offense as they scored 3 in the 7th, 3 in the 8th, and 1 in the 9th with solid hitting and a few untimely Barracuda' errors. The Barracudas scored one of their own in the 7th on a Rüesch double and then a Colindres single. The final score was 12-3 but the Flyers only outhit the 'Cudas 14-12. However, the Barracudas committed four errors while the Flyers' defense was flawless. Rogers led the Barracudas' offense as he was 3-4 with a double. Strahil Georgiev, Coma, and Colindres also had 2 hit games for the 'Cudas.

Game two was huge for the Barracudas as they regrouped and played an almost flawless game to give the Flyers their worst loss of the season. After the game was scoreless through the first two innings the Barracudas' offense exploded for 6 runs in the 3rd with the help of 5 hits and a couple of errors. All 6 runs were recorded with 2 outs and only a runner on first base. Lead off hitter Georgiev then came up and laced a single to put runners on first and second before Rüesch got the first clutch hit to score Manu Hirtz from second for the game's first run. Nichols came up and hit a double down the right field line to score Georgiev and put runners at 2nd and 3rd. Nderim Coma then ripped a single up the middle to score both Rüesch and Nichols. Colindres reached on an error before Rogers got another clutch hit to score Coma. With the 10th batter of the inning hitting, Rogers stole 2nd and Colindres scored on the throw to second to make the score 6-0. The Barracudas added two more in the 4th inning after Miguel Conde singled and then Rüesch and Nichols again got back to back two out hits. They added 2 in the 5th to make the score 10-0 as Colindres and Rogers got on again to start the inning and then scored as the bottom of the order executed brilliantly to move them over and then score them. Defensively the 'Cudas were very good as well. Nichols got the start and was in complete command allowing only two baserunners, an infield single with two outs in the first and a one out walk in the 3rd, in his complete game shutout. He struck out 12 in the game but was helped defensively by nice catches on line drives by Coma at first and Hirtz in left and also on tough grounders to Rüesch, Colindres, and Coma.

The 'Cudas will anxiously await the result of Saturday's matchup before possibly traveling to Thewil on Sunday for their semi-final matchup against last year champs.

NLA KEEPS PLAYOFF HOPES ALIVE AGAINST EMBRACH

The Barracudas split with the Mustangs on a beautiful Saturday afternoon in Embrach. The two games were completely different as Embrach played very well in game 1, an 8-1 loss for the Barracudas, while the ‘Cudas were able to get revenge with a well played 6-0 victory in game 2. The Barracudas now stand at 14-11 overall with 3 games remaining. They are 5th in the standings, 1 game behind the Zurich Challengers and 1.5 games behind the Bern Cardinals for the last playoff spot.

Game 1 featured Mustang veteran Roger Savoldelli against Barracuda righty Andi Rüesch. Rüesch was coming off a fantastic last start against the Challengers but unfortunately he wasn’t able to get a lot of offensive or defensive support in game 1. Embrach was able to put 2 runs on the board early in the game with the help of a hit batter, a few timely hits, and a few stolen bases. The Barracudas offense meanwhile was stagnant against Savoldelli. They were unable to string together multiple hits in an inning and the Embrach defense played superbly. An untimely pickoff at first base and a caught stealing at second also slowed down Barracuda rallies. Embrach was able to push across a couple more runs in the middle innings to extend their lead to 4-0. The lone Barracuda run came on a RBI single by Brent Nichols with one out which scored Beni Montag from 3rd base. Montag came into relief for Rüesch in the middle of the 6th inning. The Barracuda defense deteriorated in the later innings and Embrach was able to push their lead to 8-1. Savoldelli continued to exhibit excellent control and limit his walks and the Barracudas were ultimately defeated by an 8-1 final. Game 1 was encouraging however as it saw the return of outfielder Manu Hirtz to the lineup after an arm injury sidelined him for 2 months. It also saw the appearance of player/coach JP Mottl in the outfield who was one of the more successful hitters on the afternoon as he was 1-3 with a walk in the game.

Game 2 was a complete turnaround for the Barracudas as they played very well and forced the Mustangs into defense miscues. This game pitted Americans Josh Crouse for the Mustangs against Barracuda starter Derek Bondo in his last game in Switzerland for the season. Bondo was in top form and the story of the game as he limited the Mustangs to only 2 hits in his complete game shutout. Head coach JP Mottl said after the game about “The Bondominator” that “he was one of the best pitchers the Barracudas have ever had.” On offense, the Barracudas struggled to score in the first few innings off of Crouse but they were able to grab a lead in the 4th inning and eventually bat all the way around the order. The ‘Cudas were able to string together a series of hits and walks, and good base running forced the Mustangs into a few costly mistakes. Later in the game, the Barracudas were able to extend their lead with more creative base running. With runners on first and second, Chico Colindres hit a bloop single down the right field line. Montag, who started at second, and Nichols who started at 1st, both had to hold to make sure that the ball dropped. Embrach at first made a good defensive play and threw behind Colindres who started for second as he thought the play was coming to the plate. However, Colindres was able to stay in a marathon rundown which allowed both Montag and Nichols to score and extend the lead to 6-0. In game two, a definite spark was provided by former Therwil Flyer and Barracuda great Stephan Suter who made a couple sparkling defensive plays at 3rd base as well as contributing two hits offensively. The Barracudas next game could determine their playoff future as they play host to the Zurich Challengers in another night game in game two of the series on August 18th.

NLA PROVIDES NIGHTTIME FIREWORKS

The Barracudas played the first ever night game under the lights in Swiss baseball history on Tuesday against the cross town rival Zurich Challengers. The game would not disappoint a very large and enthusiastic crowd that showed up for the historic match as the Barracudas won on an extra inning walk off single. The 4-3 thriller against the 3rd place Challengers puts the ‘Cudas in sole possession of 4th place and the last playoff spot.

The pitching matchup for this late night dual pitted Challenger righty Tobias Siegrist against fellow right hander Andi Rüesch. The game would turn into a defensive barn burner as both pitchers were very tough to hit. The ‘Cudas jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the 1st inning however after the first two hitters were retired. Brent Nichols legged out an infield single deep into the 6 hole to start the rally. Hasson Rogers then came up and belted a double down the right field line which scored Nichols to open the scoring. After a wild pitch put Rogers on 3rd, the Challenger catcher tried to back pick him on ball four to Chico Colindres. This throw sailed into left field and allowed Rogers to score the second run of the inning. Rüesch was unhittable in his first few innings of work retiring the first 10 hitters he faced, six of these flyouts to left fielder Marcel ‘Loco’ Ochsner and centerfielder Clemens Lombriser. The Challengers got their first run in the 4th inning after American player/coach Brian Hipps broke Rüesch’s perfect game up with a single up the middle. After a slow ground ball moved him over to second, the Challengers got a clutch two out single from their cleanup batter to score Hipps and make the game 2-1. The Challengers tied the game in the top of the fifth with a one out single followed by a towering double off the left field fence by 9 hitter and former Barracuda Farid Bekkali. The Barracudas got this run back and regained the lead in the bottom half of the inning however with the help of some shaky Challenger defense. After two out were recorded, Rogers reached base on an errant throw from shortstop Brian Hipps. Chico Colindres also reached on an error from 1st baseman Bekkali who then compounded the mistake by throwing away a ball to 3rd base to try and get Rogers who used some very heads up baserunning. This errant throw allowed Rogers to score again and give the Barracudas their lead back. The score would stay 3-2 through the next two innings as both pitchers did not allow a runner to reach scoring position. Beni Montag would then come into the game to pitch at the top of 8th, relieving Rüesch who pitched 7 very strong innings giving up only 4 hits and allowing one walk. The 8th turned out to be a scary one for the ‘Cudas as the Challengers tied the game and nearly broke the game open. The leadoff batter singled and stole second to start the inning before Hipps singled again to tie the game at 3. Siegrist, batting in the 3 hole, then doubled to put runners at second and third with nobody out. The Barracudas played the infield in but this was unnecessary as Montag reached back and struck out the cleanup hitter and then got the 5 hitter to ground back to him. The Barracudas then elected to intentionally walk the 6th hitter and catcher Casimiro to load the bases. The next batter then popped up in foul territory which catcher Sascha Litscher made an unbelievable circus catch on to end the inning and preserve the tie. In the bottom of the 8th, Colindres started off the inning with his 2nd hit and then Chris Bissig bunted him over to scoring position but the Barracudas were unable to score him. In the 9th inning, Montag settled down and retired the side and the Barracudas were also retired in order. This sent the first ever night game into extra innings. The Challengers failed to score in the 10th as well thanks to a great diving catch by Ochsner in left field and a great over head catch by 2nd baseman Rogers in shallow center field. Montag struck out his 3rd batter of the game to end the inning and set up the drama in the bottom of the 10th. Brent Nichols led off the 10th with a walk, still of pitcher Tobias Siegrist who pitched an extra inning complete game for the Challengers. Rogers then hit a ball to shortstop and as Nichols broke up the double play, the 2nd basemen’s throw sailed wide and allowed Rogers to advance into scoring position. The Challengers then decided to intentionally walk a hot hitting Colindres, who reached base in all five plate appearances to set the stage for Chris ‘Basher’ Bissig. Bissig would turn into the night’s hero as he hit a two strike line drive into center field which scored Rogers, his third run of the game, and gave the ‘Cudas the dramatic late night walk off victory. The win was Montag’s first of the season and made Siegrist the tough luck loser for the Challengers. The Barracudas must now travel to Embrach this Saturday to play the 2nd place Mustangs. The second game against the Challengers will be made up in the middle of August.
