NLA ends season on high note

The Barracudas traveled to Reussbuhl on Sunday to play two make up games against the Eagles from the doubleheader that was rained out the first weekend of August. The Barracudas were able to end the season well with a pair of wins against the league’s last place team. The ‘Cudas took game one in a 7 inning mercy rule 11-0 and equaled their score with an 11-4 drubbing in game two…

Frank Berchtold took the mound in game one is his last start before a 10 month sojourn in Singapore. For the second straight weekend, Berchtold was dominant on the mound. Berchtold scattered 5 Eagles base runners allowing 3 walks and 2 hits. He faced only 3 over the minimum as Nderim Coma, making his first start at catcher on the season, picked off a runner at first, and threw out a would be base stealer at second. Berchtold also struck out 13 for the game including 6 of the last 7 he faced. The Barracuda’s offense finally got rolling against the Eagles as they scored in every inning but the first and sixth. This included a 4 run inning in the 5th and a 3 run inning in the 7th to give them the 10 run lead they needed for the mercy rule. The Barracuda offense was balanced as well as every starter scored at least one run. Andi Ruesch led the offense with a 3-4 game including a ground rule double with the bases loaded. Chris Bissig also had a multi-hit game as he was 2-3 with a walk. Stefan Spring reached base in all four of his plate appearances and Holgi Schmidt had the ‘Cudas only other extra base hit with a double.

In game 2, the Barracuda offense was also able to push across 11 runs through 7 innings. The Barracudas were held scoreless in the first two frames but then broke out with a 3 run 3rd inning. The Eagles responded with one of their own in the 3rd, but the Barracudas were able to add a run to their lead in the 4th and 5th. The Eagles also scored one in the 5th and two in the 6th, while the Barracudas scored 3 in the 6th and 7th innings to make the final 11-4. The top 3 hitters in the Barracuda lineup, Brent Nichols, Beni Montag, and Nderim Coma all had multi-hit games as Nichols was 2-5 with a double, Montag was 2-4 with a hit by pitch, and Coma was 3-5 with two stolen bases. Strahil Georgiev also was 2-3 with a walk batting in the 9 hole. The win went to Barracuda starter Beni Montag who went 4 solid innings on the afternoon. Stefan Spring came into relief in the 5th inning and held the lead until Brent Nichols replaced him with 2 outs in the 6th. Nichols then struck out the side in the 7th to end the game and the season for the Barracudas.
